How to run a jameya with friends

Running a savings circle with friends or family works best when the rules are agreed up front and everyone can see the same record. This guide shows how to do it with CIRCUL.

Step by step

  1. Agree the rules first

Agree the contribution, the number of members (and so the number of months), the due date and the turn order. Talk about what happens if someone pays late.

  2. Invite only people you trust

Create the circle in CIRCUL and share the invite link or code only with people you know. Turn on “Approve each new member” so nobody joins without you.

  3. Check every seat before the start

Each member adds the IBAN where they want to receive their turn. Before the start, check that no seat, IBAN or turn is missing. Members and order are fixed at the start.

  4. Collect by bank transfer

Each cycle, members transfer to your IBAN from their own bank and tap “I’ve sent it”. Check your bank app, then confirm or dispute each one.

  5. Pay the recipient

Once every contribution is confirmed, transfer the pot to that turn’s recipient. They confirm it arrived, and the circle moves to the next turn.

Tips for organisers

  • As organiser you hold members’ money between collection and payout, and you are responsible for it. Pay each turn promptly.
  • Use the circle ledger: what was collected, what was paid out, and who has not paid yet, cycle by cycle.
  • If someone needs a few more days, give them more time in the app instead of a side message, so the record stays clear.
  • Members who prefer privacy can hide their name from other members; you will still see who they are.

Not a bank. CIRCUL is a coordination and record-keeping tool, not a bank. It never holds, moves or guarantees money. All transfers happen between members’ own bank accounts. Only join circles with people you know and trust.
